The Heart and Soul of Fernando Romero

Born in Mexico City on September 7, 1964, Fernando Romero’s love for soccer defined his life. His early talent earned him a place in the Cruz Azul academy and time with their reserve team.

In 1993, Fernando made a courageous move to the U.S., seeking life-saving medical treatment for his son Adrian, who faced polycystic kidney disease. Settling in Omaha, Fernando quickly became a cornerstone of the local soccer community, excelling as a key player for the Omaha Flames indoor team.

Founding the Omaha Raptors

Fernando’s legacy grew from a moment of parental dedication. Determined to give his son Ivan the chance to play despite financial barriers, he founded the Omaha Raptors youth club. Fernando personally covered league fees and uniforms for children who could not afford them. His mission was clear: create a welcoming environment where every child could enjoy the game, build skills, and feel part of a team.

Overcoming Life’s Toughest Challenges

Six years ago, Fernando faced a formidable opponent: a severe cancer that began in his shoulder and spread aggressively. Even during treatment, he remained committed to coaching and playing, embodying the same determination he taught his players on the field.

Today, Adrian runs the Raptors program, expanding its reach to provide more sports opportunities while keeping youth development at the core. The club continues to create pathways for children to participate, grow their skills, and enjoy the benefits of team sports.
